Friars pick up another backstop, Dial, in Round 15

June 9, 2013  2:12 AM

By Jamal Collier / MLB.com

The Padres used back-to-back picks on catchers when they selected Tyler Dial in the 15th round (448th overall) of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

Dial was the third consecutive junior college player selected by the Padres after he spent last season at Gulf Coast Community College. He attended Auburn in 2010, but redshirted his first season.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder was a middle-of-the-order hitter for Gulf Coast last season.

Dial attended a Padres workout a couple of weeks ago, and he is expected to sign with the team instead of attending Columbus State next season.

PANAMA CITY — Two-year-old Penelope May was all smiles as her dad, David May, guided her through the water at the Gulf Coast State College pool Monday.

The Mays joined seven other teams as GCSC kicked off its first parent/child swim lesson of the season, which is open to kids aged 6 months to 3 years.

“She just loves the water,” May said of Penelope, who completed an infant survival swim class at the Panama City Beach Aquatic Center last summer. “We’re just trying to get her started on the swimming. We haven’t done any swimming for nine months, so we’re just trying to get her back into it.”

Shepherded by their parents, the children learned to kick their legs by chasing toys and float on their backs while singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”

The parent/child class is just one of several Red Cross swim classes offered at GCSC through the end of July.

PANAMA CITY — The past weekend was about focusing on what’s most important to Jim and Joey McCarthy. Life, family and baseball.

The elder and father, Jim, saw Joey pitch for the first time in more than two years Saturday for Gulf Coast in Tallahassee. The younger McCarthy guided the Commodores to a 6-3 victory in a game where Jim admitted he was likely more nervous than his right-handed offspring. It highlighted and softened a week that began with Jim, a Massachusetts police officer for 32 years, working into the late hours of the night Monday during and after the Boston Marathon bombing.

PENSACOLA — Susan Painter has been looking for a reason to dance since 2006. On Thursday, her Gulf Coast softball team gave her that reason.

The Lady Commodores swept homestanding Pensacola 13-5, 9-2 in a doubleheader to clinch the Panhandle Conference championship. It was GC’s first conference crown in seven seasons and Painter’s sixth in her 19 years as the Lady Commodores’ fastpitch coach. PANAMA CITY — She had to leave eventually. But that didn’t make it any easier to let her go.

Mary “Roonie” Scovel stepped down from her post as the women’s basketball coach at Gulf Coast in February, calling an end to an illustrious Hall of Fame career spanning 16 years at the school.
