Pitching against Vancouver, Greathouse struck out eight over six shutout frames. He allowed a third-inning double and sixth-inning walk but otherwise kept the Canadians off the bases. The win came on Greathouse's longest outing as a pro, and he's allowed just two runs -- one earned -- over his last four appearances.

Cam Greathouse
Drafted by Cubs in the 8th Round

June 12, 2010
Q&A: Eighth-Round Pick Cam Greathouse
InsidetheIvey.com (By Steve Holley ) - Left-hander Cameron Greathouse came to Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla., as a left-handed hitting outfielder. He left as a pitcher drafted in the eighth round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs this week. Greathouse was 10-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 15 games for the Commodores this past season. He struck out 131 batters in 88.1 innings and hit .399 with 11 home runs in 52 games.

Q: What were your thoughts when you heard your name called by the Cubs?

A: I had stopped (following) after the seventh round because I thought this year wasn’t going to be the year. But my roommate from school is from Chicago and he called and told me I’d been drafted. I was in a state of shock for about 15 minutes. I had scouts tell me fourth through sixth round, and my adviser said if I wasn’t taken by then, they probably had taken me off the board thinking that I’m unsignable.

Baseball: GC's early state exit testament to stiff competition
NEWS HERALD (By Brad Milner ) - LAKELAND, FL — Gulf Coast’s ace pitcher was hampered by cramps. The Commodores’ defense was spotty at the wrong time. And bats went cold at an inopportune moment. But coach Mike Kandler offered no excuses. The fact GC (41-12) lasted only three games in the FCCAA Gulf District/NJCAA Region 8 junior college baseball tournament was a testament to the difficulty of the state tournament field, he said. “When you play against the best teams in the state every mistake is exploited,” Kandler said. “Pitchers will be better, teams are tougher and there’s equal balance throughout the state.”

GC Diamond Report: Lane chases records
NEWS HERALD (By Brad Milner ) - PANAMA CITY — Excuse the cliché, but records are meant to be broken. And to call Bryce Lanes' hot to start the season may be an understatement. The Gulf Coast baseball sophomore has blistered opposing pitchers with a .429 batting average through the team’s first 25 games. He also has 36 RBIs, and is on pace for a record. He averages 1.44 RBIs per game. He’s on pace for 72 for the season, including 36 more through the remainder of the season. That figure would be four more than the record of 71 set by Scott Clemo in 1984 and tied by Roger Nylen in 1993. Lane also is in the Top 10 all-time in RBIs with 83. If he finishes with 70 or more RBIs this season he will only trail Clemo (133) for the all-time lead.

Conference begins: GC baseball will open the Panhandle Conference season Saturday at Northwest Florida State in a 1 p.m. game. It’s the first of a three-game series, with games in Panama City on Monday and in Niceville on Wednesday. GC softball will open Panhandle play at rival Chipola College March 17 in a doubleheader. The Lady Commodores’ Panhandle home opener is March 25 against NWF State. The Panhandle baseball season opened Tuesday. Pensacola defeated Chipola 6-0 and Tallahassee beat NWF 6-3.

GC baseball team has eye on Panhandle Conference title
NEWS HERALD (By Brad Milner ) - PANAMA CITY - Gulf Coast has the core in place for a run at a Panhandle Conference baseball championship. The Commodores now need a few complementary pieces to fit into place to solidify that chance. Gulf Coast returns six of its top eight hitters from last year’s 32-20 squad, which finished 8-12 in the conference. Its top two pitchers, and two of the best in the conference, also are back. Gulf Coast coach Mike Kandler loaded the nonconference schedule in hopes of getting his team prepared for an even longer Panhandle trek. The schedule is 24 games, six against each school, which makes depth an important factor. Kandler believes a veteran team with 12 sophomores, including nine with GC last season, can provide results. “You always hope experience will ultimately make you better in the close games,” Kandler said. “There are no guarantees, but a lot of these guys have been tested and that will always help you.” GC opens the season this weekend with the First Pitch Classic, featuring eight top junior college teams at Bill Frazier Field. The Panhandle Conference season opens March 13.
