Commodores win home opener

PANAMA CITY — The Gulf Coast baseball team picked up a victory in its 2019 debut at Bill Frazier Field, knocking off Shelton State 5-3 to improve 5-5 on the season.

The Commodores rallied back from a 3-0 deficit through five innings to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and two more in the eighth.

Brad Lord pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the win for Gulf Coast, giving up just two hits and striking out a pair. Frank Furey also had two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and struck out five, while Jack Guzek started and surrendered two earned runs on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.

Brett Wisely led the Commodore offense with two hits, while Justin Kelley was 1 for 2 with a double, two walks, an RBI, and a run scored. Brycen Braswell was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Evan Johnson doubled and scored a run.

Gulf Coast will be back in action at Frazier Field on Friday for two more games, the first coming against Shelton State at 10 a.m. The Commodores will later take on Coastal Alabama-Monroeville at 4 p.m.

Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
