Two-run 8th lifts Pirates past Commodores

PENSACOLA — Pensacola State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 9-8 victory over Gulf Coast in Panhandle Conference baseball action Tuesday night.

The Commodores fell to 20-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play, while the Pirates improved to 16-21 and 3-9 in the Panhandle.

Jacob Riordan earned the win for Pensacola State with three innings of relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Peyton Knight took the loss for Gulf Coast, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Trailing 7-4 through four innings, Gulf Coast got a solo home run from Johnson in the top of the fifth inning, then tacked on two more in the sixth on an RBI single by Wisely and an RBI sacrifice fly by Johnson to score Halfacre.

The Commodores broke a 7-7 tie with a run in the top of the eighth inning when Brett Wisely walked, moved to second base on an error, stole third, and scored on a passed ball.

Pensacola State took the lead for good in the home half of the eighth when Angel Diaz hit a two-RBI single to bring home Fausto Lopez and Luke Coker.

Wisely led the Gulf Coast offense, going 2 for 2 with a home run, two runs, and three RBI, with Evan Johnson finishing 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Reid Halfacre was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs.

Ryan Brewer led the Pirates, going 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, two runs, and four RBI, with Sean Ross going 3 for 5 with a home run.

Gulf Coast will next play Thursday at Tallahassee, while Pensacola State hosts a doubleheader with Marion Military Institute on Thursday.
