The Gulf Coast men put an end to their own two-game losing streak, heating up in the second half offensively to seize control and pull away for the conference win.

The Commodores (18-5, 3-3) trailed 26-24 at halftime after shooting just 7 for 25 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. GC was far more assertive offensively in the second half, and the Pirates (16-7, 2-3) were unable to keep pace.

GC moved into third place and remained a game behind Chipola (21-2, 4-2), which defeated first-place Northwest Florida State 82-79 on Saturday. The Raiders (19-2, 5-1) lead the Indians by a game.

“It helped open things up when we got some transition buckets off some long rebounds and turnovers,” GC coach Jay Powell said.

GC gained a 28-26 lead on Leonard Smith’s layin early in the second half, and Chad Frazier’s 3-pointer minutes later extended the Commodore lead to 32-27. Devin Wilson did his part to keep Pensacola in contention with four 3-pointers in a seven-minute span, but no other Pirate player scored during that window as GC stretched its lead.

Zach Reynolds delivered three big buckets during a 12-3 run, the last of which was a pretty turnaround jumper from the post that gave the Commodores a 46-36 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Another reserve, Dylan Smith, added a key 3-pointer during that spurt.

“Those types of shots allow you to separate a little bit,” Powell said.

Pensacola’s last gasp came with 5 minutes remaining when Denzel Richardson drilled a 3-pointer to pull his team within 52-45, but GC answered with eight straight points to put the contest out of reach.

Five GC players scored in double figures. Devon Baulkman tossed in 15, Chad Frazier had 12, Leonard Smith and Jose Rodrigues each added 11, and Reynolds had 10. Smith also contributed with nine rebounds for the Commodores, who outrebounded Pensacola 41-35.

Qiydar Davis led the Pirates with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Wilson added 12.
