PENSACOLA — Gulf Coast squandered an opportunity to create a three-way tie for first place in the Panhandle Conference on Wednesday night.

Pensacola forced the Commodores into a pedestrian pace and a bevy of missed shots in a 69-53 victory in a men’s basketball game at the Lou Ross Center.

GC (16-9 overall, 4-4 conference) entered the night tied with Northwest Florida State for second place in the Panhandle, one game behind Chipola. After NWF State’s 90-83 victory over Chipola on Wednesday, the Commodores now trail both teams by a game with four games left in the season.

GC fell behind by double digits in the first half and trailed 29-18 at halftime. Pensacola briefly extended its lead coming out of the break before Commodore guards Jon Wade and Devon Baulkman made consecutive field goals to pull GC within 39-29.

Denzel Richardson and RaAnthony Sanders made 3-pointers on subsequent trips down the floor, however, to push the Pirates’ lead back to 16 at 45-29 and put the game out of reach.
