PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast took its second straight win Friday by knocking off Illinois Central 80-65 at the Billy Harrison Field House.

Davaris McGowens led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Jeremy Harris added 16 points and four rebounds, and Rodney Ross had 13 points and five rebounds. Donovan Franklin also had 11 points and three assists.

The Commodores were coming off of an 81-58 win over Sound Doctrine Prep on Tuesday and followed it up with an even more impressive performance Friday.

Gulf Coast jumped out to an 18-7 lead through the first media timeout and carried a 10-point edge into the halftime break. Illinois Central briefly got the deficit back to single digits in the second half, but the Commodores pushed it back up to as much as 19 and cruised to victory.

“We set the tone defensively pretty well early in the basketball game,” Gulf Coast coach Jay Powell said. “That allowed us to create a little separation.”

The coach said he was especially pleased with his team’s ability to negotiate its way through Illinois Central’s full-court press.

“I felt like the men did a nice job of handling the pressure,” Powell said. “There are a couple of teams in the (Panhandle Conference) who are pressing a little  bit, so it’s a game to help us prepare for that going into conference play.”

Gulf Coast will next be in action Nov. 13-14 in Barnesville, Ga., against Gordon State College and Georgia Highlands.
