PANAMA CITY — Overtime has been a familiar place for Gulf Coast to find itself during this Panhandle Conference schedule, the Commodores seem to be becoming more and more comfortable with extra basketball.

Gulf Coast earned its second overtime victory in the last three games Saturday night at the Billy Harrison Field House, edging past Tallahassee 100-97 to keep its slim postseason hopes alive.

With the victory, the Commodores improved to 18-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while the Eagles dropped to 18-10 and 7-3.

Cobe Goosby led Gulf Coast with 29 points, with Donovan Franklin adding 24 and Jeremy Harris 23. David Simmons led the Eagles with 22 points, while Daishon Smith scored 20 and Jahvaughn Powell 18.

It was an impressive and needed bounce-back performance for a Commodores team that was routed by Chipola 94-72 four days earlier. Commmodores coach Jay Powell said Wednesday was the response that he was looking for.

“I was proud of the men tonight because we were tied with about 18 minutes to go Saturday and I felt like when the other team made shots we didn’t step up and compete really hard, but tonight the opposite happened,” he said. “We got hit in the mouth and came back and decided we wanted to battle and compete and have some heart. I’m real proud of the men for how they responded to adversity.”

TCC led by as much as 17 points in the second half and looked in total control of the game after a corner three by Smith made it 54-37 with 16:17 to play.

Another three by Rashad Lewis made it 60-46 Eagles with 13:35 to play, but Gulf Coast fought back to get it to single digits after consecutive drives by Franklin and Van Johnson made it 62-53 with 12:15 remaining.

The Eagles led 77-66 after a huge tomahawk dunk by Stavian Allen with 6:07 to play, but the Commodores answered

with an 18-6 run to improbably take the lead.

A three-point play by Franklin and a step-back jumper by Harris cut the deficit to five, with a Goosby 3-pointer, two free throws by Harris, and a transition layup by Goosby off of a long pass from Johnson putting GC up 84-83 with 1:35 remaining.

Smith came back with a 3-pointer to put TCC up two, but Gulf Coast drew even on two free throws by Goosby with 11.9 seconds left. Smith had a chance to win it in regulation, but missed a pull-up jumper and a desperation heave on the follow as time expired.

In the overtime, it was Goosby who took control. The 6-5 sophomore put GulfCoast up 90-88 with a driving basket, then converted two free throws and scored on a spinning shot in the lane to make it 96-92 Commodores with 1:30 left.

Smith hit two free throws and scored on a tough, contested drive of his own to tie it back up with 46 seconds left, but a pair of free throws by Harris put Gulf Coast ahead 98-96 with 33.1 seconds to play.

Smith had a chance to tie it back up with 11.7 seconds on the clock, but missed the second of two free throws and

Franklin hit a pair to put the Commodores up three with 8.7 seconds left.

TCC had a chance to send it into another overtime, but Lewis’ contested three missed and so did Allen’s putback attempt as time expired.

The Eagles controlled the action for much of the first half, scoring seven of the first nine points and leading by as much as 12 on two separate occasions before taking a 44-33 edge into the halftime break.

Gulf Coast led briefly thanks to a 10-0 run featuring back-to-back threes by Johnson bookended by baskets by Goosby

at the rim to make it 24-23 Commodores with nine minutes to half.

TCC quickly reclaimed the lead with a 3-pointer by Smith, and Simmons and Powell followed with threes moments later to put the Eagles up 34-26.

Simmons followed with a hoop and Powell with a basket cut for a finish at the rim off of a nice pass by Allen to make it 38-26 with 3:07 to half.

Gulf Coast will next play at Northwest Florida State on Saturday, while TCC will host Chipola on Saturday.
