PANAMA CITY — Gulf Coast wasn’t quite as sharp as it had been in its previous four victories this season Thursday night at the Billy Harrison Field House, but the Commodores proved they didn’t need their ‘A’ game to find the winner’s circle.

Daniel Kiely and Myles McGregor led a balanced scoring effort for Gulf Coast with 15 points each in a 77-63 victory over Enterprise State. The Commodores improved to 5-0 on the season, while the Boll Weevils dropped to 2-2.

Will Robinson and Tyree Gibson each added 12 points for GC, followed by Quadree Smith with 11, and Josh Wade with 10. Malik Hunt was the top scorer for Enterprise State with 21 points. Gulf Coast led 39-31 at halftime and extended the margin to 20 in the second half before fending off a late Enterprise State rally that saw the lead shrink to single digits with just over three minutes to play.

The Commodores struggled with the Boll Weevils’ pressure defense for much of the night and missed 14 free throws, though GC coach Jay Powell said he was impressed with his team’s ability to win comfortably even without its best effort.

“You’re not gonna play 29 straight games playing the best you possibly can,” he said. “We still came away with a 14-point win at home and that’s exciting. At the same time, as a coach you’re wanting to constantly improve and get better every single day, especially early in the season. It’s not a negative night – any time you win one of your 29 games, it’s a positive – but I want us

to get good and I want us to get good really fast.”

The Commodores will likely need to play better this weekend, as they travel to Niceville today for a pair of games against NJCAA top 25 foes in No. 16 San Jacinto today and No. 21 Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday.

Gulf Coast and Enterprise State traded the lead five times in the first half before the Commodores moved in front for good on a driving basket by Kiely to make it 25-24. A pair of free throws each by Smith and Robinson followed by a basket inside by Smith put Gulf Coast up 39-27 with 1:27 until halftime.

It was 47-39 just over four minutes into the second half after a 3-pointer from Matthew Mazique when the Commodores tried to break the game open with a 13-1 run. A three from Wade made it 53-39, with Kiely driving for two and then finding Marlon Adams for a fast break bucket to push the lead to 58-39. A basket by Ben Eke Kazee made it 60-40 with 11:10 remaining.

The Boll Weevils fought their way back into it with a 20-9 run, getting a three-point play from Hunt to cut it to 12 with 7:14 to play, and later a basket inside by Hunt after a missed free throw to make it 67-59 with 3:03 on the clock. Hunt fouled out on the next play, however, and after 3 of 4 free throws by McGregor, Gibson hit Robinson on a run-out for a two-handed dunk to put

the Commodores up 72-59 with 1:50 on the clock.

McGregor added another free throw and a pair of baskets in the paint to finish with eight points in the final three minutes.
