GC opens New Year’s Classic with win over Coastal Alabama

PANAMA CITY — The Gulf Coast men’s basketball team opened up play in the Gulf Coast State College New Year’s Classic at the Billy Harrison Field House with a 74-69 victory over Coastal Alabama.


Will Robinson had 28 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field and 7 of 8 from the free throw line to lead the Commodores (13-3), while Quadree Smith added 14 points and seven rebounds. Myles McGregor had 13 points on 3 of 7 from the 3-point line, and Tyrie Gibson put in nine points and six assists. Antonio Howard led Coastal Alabama with 18 points and Tyshawn Davis scored 15.


Gulf Coast led 39-33 at halftime, though Coastal Alabama fought back to tie it up at 61-61 with 5:08 to play. Consecutive baskets by Smith put the Commodores up for good at 65-63, with a pair of free throws by McGregor and another basket by Smith making it 69-65 with 2:38 remaining. A three-point play by Robinson with 1:35 on the clock gave the Commodores a seven-point edge at 72-65. Coastal Alabama couldn’t get closer than the final margin the rest of the way.


The Commodores will be back in action at the Billy Harrison Field House on Saturday against Gordon State at 4 p.m. Coastal

Alabama plays Chipola at noon.

The Indians won the first game of the day at Gulf Coast thanks to a 27-point performance from Shamarkus Kennedy. TJ Howard added 19 points and Brandon Mahan 17. Yuat Alok also scored 11 points, while Keishawn Brewton and JJ Miles scored nine points each.


Tariq Jenkins scored 21 points to lead East Georgia State, followed by Aaron Reddick with 13, JaVaughn Patterson with 11, and De’Miria Glover with 10. Momodou Singhetah also scored nine points.


Chipola (10-3) next plays Saturday against Coastal Alabama at noon, while East Georgia State will take on Northwest Florida State at 2 p.m.
