Robinson’s 25 lifts GC to second straight win at Classic

PANAMA CITY — The Gulf Coast men’s basketball team made it two wins in as many days at the Gulf Coast State College New Year’s Classic Saturday afternoon with an 80-72 victory over Gordon State.


The Commodores, who defeated Coastal Alabama 74-69 on Friday, improved to 14-3 on the season in their last non-conference game of the season. Gulf Coast will open play in the Panhandle Conference on Saturday at home against Tallahassee.


Will Robinson led GC with 25 points on 10 of 18 shooting from the field, while Daniel Kiely added 10 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two blocked shots. Myles McGregor had 10 points and six rebounds. Marlon Adams and Quadree Smith scored nine points each, and Tyrie Gibson had eight points.


Orente’ Anderson was the top scorer for Gordon State with 17 points, followed by AJ Cheeseman with 14. The Commodores never trailed in the first half and took a 39-31 advantage into the break, but Gordon State fought back to take the lead a 52-51 with 10:51 remaining.


It was tied 58-58 with 8:39 to play when Robinson made two baskets in a row to put his team up four, with another bucket by Kiely giving GC a 65-58 edge with 6:45 on the clock. Gordon State made it a one-possession game at 72-69 GC with 2:32 remaining, but a basket by Smith and two free throws from Josh Wade gave the Commodores a 76-59 lead with 23 seconds to



Chipola 85, Coastal Alabama 78


The Indians improved to 11-3 on the season with the victory, their second in a row at the Classic. Brandon Mahan led Chipola with 20 points, followed by Yuat Alok with 19, and Shamarkus Kennedy with 17. TJ Howard also had 12 points, and Keishawn Brewton had nine.


Antonio Howard was the top scorer for Coastal Alabama with 20 points, with Cardiques Baggage adding 17 points, Tyshawn Davis 16, and Jordan Phillips 13. Chipola will open Panhandle Conference play Jan. 9 at Tallahassee.
