Gulf Coast men outlast Pensacola in 2OT; Lady Commodores win big

PENSACOLA — Gulf Coast’s men’s basketball team took a 90-89 double-overtime win over Pensacola State in Panhandle Conference action Saturday night.

 

Donovan Franklin led the Commodores (17-9 overall, 4-4 in conference) with 27 points to go with seven rebounds, while Jeremy Harris added 23 points and nine rebounds. Van Johnson also scored 10 points. Jamal Thomas and Hassani Gravett both had 21 points to lead the Pirates (10-11, 2-5).

 

Gulf Coast led 41-29 at halftime, but the Pirates fought back to tie it up at 73-73 at the end of regulation. The Commodores led 81-74 with just over a minute left in the first overtime, but the Pirates again rallied with seven straight points to send it to a second OT.

 

The Lady Commodores had no trouble with Pensacola State, dispatching the Lady Pirates 74-39 to improve to 22-0 overall and 8-0 in the Panhandle Conference.

 

Kristina King led Gulf Coast with 18 points and Amanda Paschal added 16, with Shaterrika O’Neal scoring eight, and Maria Castro and Raven Fox seven each. Mercedes Suarez led Pensacola State with 13 points.

 

King got off to a fast start with eight points in a 22-11 first quarter for the Lady Commodores, who led 39-23 at halftime. GulfCoast put the game away with a dominant third quarter, using smothering defense to hold PensacolaState to six points on 1-of-11 shooting.

 

The Lady Commodores finished the third quarter on a 15-3 run capped off by a 3-pointer by Castro and four straight free throws by O’Neal to take a 58-29 lead going into the fourth.

 

Gulf Coast will be back in action Saturday against Chipola in Marianna.
