Gulf Coast hits the road to face Chipola

The Gulf Coast women’s and men’s basketball teams are back in action Saturday night as they head to Marianna to take on Chipola. The women’s game will tip at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

 

The No. 3 Lady Commodores (15-1 overall, 3-0 in the Panhandle Conference) will look to remain the league’s only unbeaten team, while the Lady Indians (11-6, 0-2) are still searching for their first conference victory. Gulf Coast has notched home wins over No. 4 Tallahassee and No. 12 Pensacola State and an away victory over No. 5 Northwest Florida State. Chipola has fallen to Tallahassee and Pensacola State on the road and lost to Northwest Florida State at home.

 

Chipola will have just one off day in between games after losing 80-70 to Pensacola State on Thursday in a game that was moved back a day due to weather. Gulf Coast had no mid-week game after its 82-61 victory over Pensacola State on Jan. 13.

 

Sophomore guard Kionna Jeter is leading the Lady Commodores in conference play at 23.7 points per game, while Shayla Bennett is putting in 17.7 points per contest. Jhileiya Dunlap is providing the interior presence with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks

per game. Freshman forward Courtajia Sanders is having a great start to conference play for Chipola with 21.5 points per game,

followed by Tyra Johnson at 13 points per game. Sanders is the leading scorer for the season at 13.8 points per contest.

 

On the men’s side, Gulf Coast (15-5, 1-2) tries to make it two wins in a row, while Chipola (14-4, 2-1) tries to solidify its hold over the No. 2 spot in the league standings by moving two games ahead of the Commodores through the first round of play.

 

The Indians opened league competition with an 87-71 road win over Tallahassee before falling to Northwest Florida State 85-73 at home. They defeated Pensacola State 68-49 on Thursday in Pensacola. Gulf Coast is coming off of a 59-57 home win over

Pensacola State on Jan. 13 after lopsided losses to Tallahassee and Northwest Florida State to open the conference schedule.

 

Will Robinson has been the top scorer for the Commodores in conference competition with 21 points per game, with Marlon

Adams averaging 10 points per league contest. Shamarkus Kennedy and Brandon Mahan are each leading Chipola in Panhandle play with 18.3 points per game, with TJ Howard adding 11.3 points and 3.7 assists per game.
