The Gulf Coast women’s and men’s basketball teams will head to Niceville on Wednesday to take on Northwest Florida State. The women’s game will tip at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.

The women’s game matches two of the top three teams in the country, with the Lady Commodores (20-2 overall, 8-1 in the Panhandle Conference) coming in ranked No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the state, while the Lady Raiders (22-2, 7-2) are No. 3 in the country and No. 2 in the state.

Gulf Coast won the first two meetings: 50-48 on Jan. 10 in Niceville, and 63-51 on Jan. 24 in Panama City. Another victory Wednesday would give the Lady Commodores a sweep of the season series and clinch at least a share of the Panhandle Conference title.

On the men’s side, it’s a matchup between first and last in the league standings, with Northwest Florida State (25-1, 8-1) coming in No. 2 in the country and No. 1 in the state, and the Commodores (15-11, 1-8) in last place in the Panhandle and riding a six-game losing streak.

The Raiders suffered their first loss of the season Saturday at Pensacola State 87-70, but they’ve won both meetings against the Commodores by an average margin of 34 points per game. Northwest took the first game 95-53 in Niceville and the second 89-63 in Panama City.

Gulf Coast’s most recent defeat came in heartbreaking fashion 81-79 to Tallahassee on Saturday, as JaQuan Morris made a twisting layup with 1.4 seconds left to play right after Will Robinson made a layup of his own for the Commodores to tie it up 79-79 with 4.4 seconds on the clock.
