Gulf Coast women win again

ROME, Ga. — The Gulf Coast women’s basketball team cruised to its second win in as many days Saturday afternoon, routing Georgia Highlands 85-63.

The top-ranked Lady Commodores (7-0) took an 84-40 victory over Walters State on Friday night in Rome, their first action in 17 days.

Naomi Mbandu and Ndeye Ciss led Gulf Coast in that game with 16 points each, while Ahlana Smith and Tatiana Jones scored 15 points apiece.

On Saturday it was Mbandu leading the way with 25 points, six rebounds, and five steals.

Jones added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Smith had 13 points and four steals. Lya Farcy contributed 10 points, thre assists, and three steals.

The Lady Commodores started strong with a 31-point first quarter and took a 48-30 lead into the halftime break.

Gulf Coast shot 48.6 percent from the field for the game, compared to 39.7 for Georgia Highlands.

Ja’Lyn Reese was the top scorer for Georgia Highlands with 21 points.

The Lady Commodores will next play Tuesday against LB Wallace in Andalusia, Ala., before returning home Friday and Saturday for the JUCO Shootout with games against Palm Beach and Daytona State.
