Lady Commodores return to action in Rome

The Gulf Coast women’s basketball team will return to action in Rome, Ga., this weekend after a two week-plus break.

The Lady Commodores (5-0) will take on Walters State (5-2) on Friday at 5 p.m. Central Time and Georgia Highlands (3-3) on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Gulf Coast comes into the weekend ranked No. 1 in the state and the nation as it has been since the start of the season.

The Lady Commodores last played Nov. 12 at home against Lurleen B. Wallace in a 74-40 victory.

Their success has been spurred in large part by the production of sophomore guard Ahlana Smith.

The 5-foot-9 UCLA transfer has been a scoring machine for the Lady Commodores thus far, averaging 29.2 points per contest while shooting 51 percent from the field and 41 percent from the 3-point line.

Sophomore forward Naomi Mbandu is also having a start to her season with 16.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 47.6 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three, and 81.3 percent from the foul line.

Freshman guard Laila Grant is the only other Gulf Coast player averaging double figure scoring at 13.3 points per contest.

Grant is also shooting a scorching 52 percent from behind the 3-point arc this season.

Freshman forward Tatiana Jones is nearly putting up a double-double with 9.6 points and a team-high 12.2 rebounds per game.

Gulf Coast is currently outscoring its opponents by an average margin of 24.6 points per contest.

After a return trip to Andalusia, Ala., on Dec. 3 to take on LB Wallace, the Lady Commodores will return home Dec. 6-7 for the JUCO Shootout with games against Palm Beach and Daytona State.
