Mike Kandler
Head Men's Baseball Coach

Michael Kandler will enter his 15th season as the Head Baseball Coach at Gulf Coast State College. Coach Kandler has been coaching for 33 years. Coach Kandler has a career record of 777-400 (.660 Winning %). His record at the helm of the Commodores is an impressive 464-248 (.652 winning %). His team's have won two Panhandle Conference Championships (2006, 2010) and have made six State Tournament appearances (2006, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016).

While at Gulf Coast, Coach Kandler has coached five All-Americans and 25 players that have signed professional baseball contracts. Having coached over 75 players who have been drafted, including big-leaguers David Herndon, Will Smith, Bob Wickman, Tim Spooneybarger and Terrance Gore, Coach Kandler is no stranger to developing big-time talent.

Prior to coming to Gulf Coast, Coach Kandler spent 5 years at Alabama Southern Community College. While at ASCC Coach Kandler's teams combined for a record of 180-104 and qualified for 4 regional tournaments. He coached 3 All-Americans and over 30 players that went on to play at the next level.

Prior to his stop at Alabama Southern, Coach Kandler was the head coach at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida for six years. His record at Pine Forest was 133-51. His Pine Forest teams qualified for the state playoffs 5 times, made two final-8 appearances and one final-4 appearance in 1997.

Coach Kandler has also coached at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the University of California-San Diego and was the assistant coach here at Gulf Coast from 1991-94.

Coach Kandler brings an intense, enthusiastic approach to coaching baseball. Gulf Coast promises to be a hard-nosed, aggressive team under his direction. The Commodores should be a fundamentally sound team that is extremely fun to watch.

Jake Schuster

Assistant Coach

Jake Schuster enters his second season with the Gulf Coast State baseball staff this year as the pitching coach.

Jake has spent one year as the video coordinator for Clemson and spent the past two seasons as the student bullpen assistant coach for Clemson. He just finished his second season as an assistant coach in the Coastal Plains League.
Jake is a native of Charlotte, NC and just finished his fifth year at Clemson University.. Jake has graduated from the University with a bachelor’s degree in Management, and is currently working on a Master’s in Athletic Leadership.

Chris Rose

Assistant Coach

Chris Rose enters his second season with the Commodore Baseball Program.

Rose has been coaching for 19 years, and was previously the Head Coach at Meridian CC and East Mississippi CC. Coach Rose led the Mississippi JUCO coaches in most players drafted, playing at 4-year school, playing Division 1,  and most players playing in the SEC during his MACJC coaching career. He had 4 players drafted while at EMCC, which previously had 5 players drafted in 48 years.

His teams averaged a 3.0+ GPA while he was coach, and he coached 27 Academic All-Americans. While at EMCC, his team won a division championship in 2014, was the state runner up in 2015, participated in the conference tournament 4 of his years and the region tournament in 2015. They were nationally ranked in three of the years he served as head coach, including achieving the highest ranking in school history. His 2014 team
became the winningest EMCC team in over two decades.

Before his time at EMCC, Rose spent 5 years as the head coach of Meridian Community College. MCC won 70% of their games over five seasons with Rose as head coach, while maintaining a 3.05 team GPA. They were MACJC Division Champions every year, 2-time State Champions, Region Champions, and Miss-Lou Conference Champions. Coach Rose had six All-Americans and one National Player of the Year. While at MCC, he coached Gold Glove Award winner and MLB All-Star Game starter Corey Dickerson as well as 5-year MLB player Tyler Moore. During his time at Meridian CC, Rose garnered 2009 NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year honors along with being named MACJC Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2006. He also earned the Mississippi Association of Coaches Coach of the Year recognition in 2008.

Prior to Meridian, he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma
mater, the University of Mobile.  Rose served as the program’s pitching/catching coach and recruiting coordinator under head coach Mike Jacobs.
