Mike Kandler
Head Men's Baseball Coach

Michael Kandler will enter his 13th season as the Head Baseball Coach at Gulf Coast State College. Coach Kandler has been coaching for 31 years. Coach Kandler has a career record of 726-356 (.672 Winning %). His record at the helm of the Commodores is an impressive 413-204 (.669 winning %). His team's have won two Panhandle Conference Championships (2006, 2010) and have made six State Tournament appearances (2006, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016).

While at Gulf Coast, Coach Kandler has coached five All-Americans and 24 players that have signed professional baseball contracts. Having coached over 75 players who have been drafted, including big-leaguers, David Herndon, Will Smith, Bob Wickman, Tim Spooneybarger and Terrance Gore.  Coach Kandler is no stranger to developing big-time talent.

Prior to coming to Gulf Coast, Coach Kandler spent 5 years at Alabama Southern Community College. While at ASCC Coach Kandler's teams combined for a record of 180-104 and qualified for 4 regional tournaments. He coached 3 All-Americans and over 30 players that went on to play at the next level.

Prior to his stop at Alabama Southern, Coach Kandler was the head coach at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida for six years. His record at Pine Forest was 133-51. His Pine Forest teams qualified for the state playoffs 5 times, made two final-8 appearances and one final-4 appearance in 1997.

Coach Kandler has also coached at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the University of California-San Diego and was the assistant coach here at Gulf Coast from 1991-94.

Coach Kandler brings an intense, enthusiastic approach to coaching baseball. Gulf Coast promises to be a hard-nosed, aggressive team under his direction. The Commodores should be a fundamentally sound team that is extremely fun to watch.

Tyler Younger
Assistant Men's Baseball Coach

Tyler Younger will enter his second season as Assistant Coach for the Commodore Baseball Program.

 

Prior to joining the Commodore Baseball Program Coach Younger spent the 2016 season as an assistant coach at Bradley University and the summer of 2016 as an assistant coach with the Holly Springs Salamanders of the Coastal Plains League, Tyler Younger begins his first season as an assistant coach at Gulf Coast.

 

Prior to his experience at Bradley, Younger spent the summer of 2015 as the bullpen coach for Team USA’s Collegiate National Team. He spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as a graduate student manager at North Carolina State, where he helped the Wolfpack to 68 wins during his two seasons and an appearance in the final game of both the 2015 ACC Baseball Championship and the 2015 NCAA Baseball Championship Fort Worth Regional. Among his duties at NC State, Younger caught bullpen sessions during practice and games, set up and assisted with drills during practice, threw batting practice and hit ground balls to infielders.

 

A four-year baseball letter winner at Methodist University from 2009-13, Younger also served as an assistant coach for the Coastal Plains League Florence Red Wolves during the 2014 summer collegiate season. While performing a wide variety of duties for Florence, Younger helped the Red Wolves to the first-half CPL West Division title and a second-place finish during the second half of the summer season, as well as a runner-up finish in the CPL championship series. Led by CPL Pitcher of the Year Mike Morrison and Hitter of the Year Gene Cone, the Red Wolves completed the 2014 campaign with a 41-23 record.

 

Younger earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and health education from Methodist University in 2013 and his master's degree in parks, recreation and tourism management with a concentration in sport management from North Carolina State University in 2015. On the diamond, Younger was a four-time USA South Academic All-Conference selection and he was the Methodist University 2012-13 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as the 2012-13 Physical Education and Health Education Major of the Year.
