Gulf Coast men, women both fall to Chipola

Both Gulf Coast men's and women's basketball teams missed out on opportunities to claim second place in the Panhandle Conference on Wednesday night thanks to road losses to Chipola in Marianna. 

In the women's game, No. 13 Chipola took a 63-51 win over the No. 22 Commodores, improving to 5-3 in the Panhandle Conference and dropping Gulf Coast to 4-4. 

Ashley Baez led the Indians with 17 points, followed by Jordan McLaughlin with 10 points, and Brenda McKinney and Ta'Shonna Wright-Gaskins with nine points each. 

Ciante Downs was the top scorer for Gulf Coast with 15 points, with Jaliyah McCain adding nine points. Leading scorer Morgan Robinson-Nwagwu, who came in averaging 21.7 points per game in conference play, was limited to just six points.

On the men's side, it was the No. 6 Indians winning 80-76 to improve to 6-2 in the Panhandle while dropping the Commodores to 4-4. 

Nae'qwan Tomlin and Achor Achor each led Chipola with 17 points, followed by Lance Erving and Shayeon Davis with 12 points apiece. 

Tauris Watson scored 26 points to lead Gulf Coast, with Chase Forte scoring 10 points, and Goodnews Kpegeol nine points.

Gulf Coast will next return home Saturday for games against Northwest Florida State at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
