PANAMA CITY, FL–The Commodores used a strong first inning to power past Pensacola State, 11-1, in game one on Saturday at Gulf Coast State College. GC scored seven runs in the opening inning to take early control of the game. Davis Avera got things started with a two-run home run to left field. Carson Zagryn followed with an RBI single, while Brayden Mann and Andrew Johnson each added two-run singles to cap the big inning.
The Commodores kept the pressure on in the second inning when Carson Zagryn hit a solo home run to left, making the score 8-0. Gulf Coast State added another run in the third inning on a double to center field by Avera.
In the fifth inning, Mann put the game away with a two-run home run to left field, giving the Commodores an 11-1 lead.
Reese Marcum earned the win on the mound for Gulf Coast. The right-hander pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out two and walking none.
Gulf Coast finished with 12 hits in the game. Johnson led the team with three hits from the leadoff spot. Mann and Avera each drove in three runs, while Zagryn added two hits.
During game 2, the Commodores used a big fourth inning to earn an 11-8 win over Pensacola State on Saturday at Gulf Coast State College. Aiden Zagryn led the way for Gulf Coast, driving in six runs on two hits. He hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning, added a sacrifice fly in the second, and doubled in the sixth to bring in another run. Both teams were strong at the plate in a high-scoring game. Gulf Coast finished with 10 hits, while Pensacola State recorded 12.
Pensacola State took an early lead in the second inning. A single, a sacrifice fly, and a two-run home run helped them score four runs. They added two more runs in the third inning to go in front 6-4. The Commodores answered in a big way in the fourth inning. GC scored six runs on four hits to take a 10-8 lead. Aiden Zagryn's three-run home run was the key moment in the inning and gave the Commodores the momentum.
Kasten Goebbert earned the win in relief for Gulf Coast. He pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two. Pierce Juhan recorded the save. Donovan Rabiei started on the mound for the Commodores, giving up six runs, five earned, over two and one-third innings. Gavin Jerkins also appeared in relief.
At the plate, Zagryn and Anthony Saleeba each had two hits for Gulf Coast.
With the win, the Commodores continued their strong play as they move forward in conference action.
