Lady Commodores sweep the Lady Eagles
The Lady Commodores held on for a 7-5 win over Tallahassee State in Game 1 on Saturday.
Gulf Coast jumped out to an early lead, scoring their first run in the top of the first inning after an error by Tallahassee State. The Eagles answered in the bottom of the second, using two home runs to tie the game at 2-2. The Lady Commodores quickly responded in the top of the third. Aasia Scerbo delivered a big single that brought in two runs giving Gulf Coast St. a 4-2 lead. In the fourth inning, Tylaya Lingo added to the momentum with a two-run home run to left field, pushing the lead to 6-2.
Tallahassee State kept battling and slowly chipped away at the lead late in the game, but the Lady Commodores stayed strong and closed out the 7-5 victory. Natalie Cole earned the win in the circle for Gulf Coast. The right-hander allowed just two hits and two runs over five innings, while striking out one and not issuing a walk. Madison Laiche picked up the save, and Kallan Mercer provided relief out of the bullpen.
At the plate, Ainyah Stokes and Ally Henderson each recorded two hits to lead the team. Lingo and Scerbo each drove in two runs. Gulf Coast also played clean defense, finishing the game without an error and turning one double play. Kiara Guzman led the team defensively with seven chances.
During Game 2 the Gulf Coast State Commodores used steady offense and strong pitching to earn a 7-1 win over Tallahassee State on Saturday.
Gulf Coast St. opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. An error by the Eagles and an RBI single from Tylaya Lingo helped the Lady Commodores take an early 2-0 lead. They added to their lead in the fourth inning when Aasia Scerbo hit a two-run home run to left field. The Lady Commodores pulled away in the sixth inning after Coco Rudolph launched a two-run home run to center field, extending the lead to 7-1.
Laiche earned the win in the circle with a complete game performance. The right-hander allowed one run on nine hits over seven innings while striking out five and not issuing a walk.
At the plate, Rudolph and Scerbo each drove in two runs to lead the Lady Commodores. Lingo added two hits and stole two bases as Gulf Coast St. totaled three stolen bases in the game.
Defensively, the Lady Commodores were sharp, committing no errors and turning two double plays. Rudolph led the team in the field with seven chances.
