Niceville, FL –The #24 Gulf Coast State Lady Commodores battled hard but came up short in a doubleheader against #2 Northwest Florida State on Saturday.
In game one, the Lady Commodores stayed within reach all game and showed strong fight late. After falling behind 2-0 early, the Lady Commodores answered in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Raiders took the lead again in the bottom half, but Lilly Land responded with a solo home run in the sixth to even the score at 3-3. Northwest Florida State would score on a walk-off single in the seventh to take a 4-3 win.
Natalie Cole went the distance in the circle for Gulf Coast, allowing four runs, three earned, while striking out four. Land led the offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In game two, the Raiders used an early surge to pull away. A three-run home run in the second inning gave Northwest Florida State the lead, and a five-run third inning extended the gap. Gulf Coast recorded three hits in the game, with Ella Grace Kelley, Ainyah Stokes, and Jaidyn Ivey each picking up one. The Lady Commodores also turned a double play on defense.
Despite the results, Gulf Coast showed resilience against one of the top teams in the nation and will look to build on that effort moving forward.
The Lady Commodores now turn their attention to a key conference matchup this week against Tallahassee State, where they will look to bounce back and continue their push in Panhandle Conference play.
