Zavior Alvarez enters his second season as Assistant Coach of the Lady Commodores Basketball Program.

Coach Alvarez joined the Lady Commodores for the 2024-25 season and made a big impact right away. He helped lead the team to a 20-8 overall record and guided four players to continue their basketball careers at four-year universities. Ja’Navia Gage transferred to Charlotte University, Clara Koulibaly went to Auburn University, Alisha Murray moved on to Grambling State, and Lesly Rivera signed with Delaware.

Coach Alvarez worked closely with Ja’Navia Gage, who earned many honors, including All-Panhandle Conference, DI All-FCSAA, NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American, and a spot on the FCSAA DI All-Tournament Team. He also coached Arianny Francisco De Olviera, Clara Koulibaly, and Alisha Murray, who each earned All-Panhandle Conference recognition.

Outside of his daily coaching at Gulf Coast State College, Coach Alvarez plays an important role in recruiting new players and helping with player skill development.

Coach Alvarez joined Gulf Coast State College staff after a two-year stint with The University of Nevada, Reno Women’s Basketball program. Prior to the 2022-2023 season, Alvarez was brought on to the Wolfpack staff as a Graduate Assistant. In his first year as a graduate assistant, he was vital in all thing’s operations on and off the court.

Entering the 2023-2024 season, Alvarez was given the promotion to the role of Player Development, where he was given an active role in recruiting and on court coaching and development. Coach Alvarez assisted in seeing the Wolfpack to a 4th place finish in a highly competitive Mountain West Conference finishing with a .500 overall record and a 10-8 record in conference play.

Prior to Nevada, Alvarez got his start in the coaching profession as a Practice Player for The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Women’s Basketball Program before being elevated to an Undergraduate Assistant prior to the 2018-2019 season.  Coach Alvarez assisted the Miners staff in all aspects of the program in his four-year stint from 2018-2022. Tasks that included but not limited to, scout preparation, video coordinator, equipment manager, and practice instruction.

In his playing days, Alvarez was an All-City basketball player at Del Valle High School in El Paso, TX. He then went on to play point guard at TaylorMade Prep in Pensacola, Florida before returning to El Paso. Alvarez followed his playing career by receiving his undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a focus in Entrepreneurship from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). To follow, Alvarez then received his master’s degree in Justice Management from The University of Nevada, Reno.
